Sleep and wakefulness in the housed pony under different dietary conditions.

چکیده
For several weeks, three ponies kept in an environment with controlled light and temperature, were studied for behaviour (time spent in recumbency and time required to consume hay or oats) and for electrical activity of the brain (cortical and sub-cortical) during the night phase of the circadian rhythm. Recumbency was adopted by all the ponies for six or seven periods during the night. With a regimen of hay ad libitum, about four hours were cumulated in sternal recumbency and only one hour in complete lateral recumbency. Various degree of sleep, as identified by cortical and hippocampal electrical activities, accounted for 30% of the circadian cycle. Paradoxical sleep was calculated to occur during 7% of the 24 hours. When oats were substituted for hay or during fasting for two to five days, the total recumbency time and the total sleep time (slow wave sleep and paradoxical sleep) increased. The time in lateral recumbency did not change.

متن کاملFos expression in orexin neurons varies with behavioral state.
The neuropeptide orexin (also known as hypocretin) is hypothesized to play a critical role in the regulation of sleep-wake behavior. Lack of orexin produces narcolepsy, which is characterized by poor maintenance of wakefulness and intrusions of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep or REM sleep-like phenomena into wakefulness. Orexin neurons heavily innervate many aminergic nuclei that promote wakeful...
متن کاملEEG delta activity during undisturbed sleep in the squirrel monkey.
The squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) exhibits a robust daily rhythm of sleep-wakefulness that is under circadian control, but the nature of homeostatic sleep regulation in this diurnal primate is poorly understood. Since delta frequency (0.5-2.0 Hz) activity in the electroencephalogram (EEG) during non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep is thought to reflect homeostatic factors contributing to s...
متن کاملLeakage Current Analysis of Polymer and Porcelain Housed Metal Oxide Surge Arresters in Humid Ambient Conditions
This paper aims to measure and analyze of the leakage current of 20 kV polymer and porcelain metal oxide surge arresters under humid ambient conditions by applying different voltages to the arresters terminal. The characteristics of the leakage currents at that stage have been investigated when changes in the ambient humidity were introduced in an artificial fog chamber. It is assumed that magn...
متن کاملO23: Modulation of Pacemaker Channels and Rhythmic Thalamic Activity by Demyelination and Inflammatory Cytokines
The thalamus is a central element for the generation of rhythmic oscillatory activity under physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Especially slow oscillations in the delta and theta frequency band which normally occur during slow-wave sleep are associated with a number of neuropsychiatric conditions if they occur during wakefulness and may be the basis for the generation of character...
